Martinique Regatta 2012 – Tour des Yoles Rondes (Part 1)

leave a comment »

Every summer, everyone in Martinique gathers to watch or take part in the annual regatta, a week-long race with traditional wooden boats. Those boats are called Yoles and their particularity is their square sail. Sailing is handled using large wooden sticks which the sailors lean on, as you can see HERE.

The regatta lasts from Sunday to Sunday, the first day being called “The prologue”, and every subsequent leg goes from town to town along the coast. The Yoles start racing around 9am and usually take 3 hours to get to the finish line. During that time, many boats owned by individuals or catamarans rented by groups of people follow the race from afar, being kept well away from the Yoles by the marine police.

Once the race is over, then THE PARTY STARTS on the boats at sea! But I’ll cover that in my next post.

I took those photos while following the 4th leg of the race this year, from Fort-de-France to Diamant (south west on this MAP).

Nantes, France

leave a comment »

On my way to Nantes, I didn’t know what to expect and I didn’t think I would like Nantes as much as I did. I found the town very homely and I even pictured myself living there. I walked a lot around town, visited its many churches and went to some very good restaurants. I didn’t think much of the riverside but I really liked the city center. Moreover, many roadworks are underway, which will certainly greatly improve the layout of the town. Big thumbs up for Nantes!

Plitvice, Croatia

with one comment

What an amazing natural Park! If you ever go to Croatia, do not forget to go to Plitvice. I spent a full day on a 12 hour excursion walking every single path in the park. A straight shoot of beautiful sighting, which prevented me from feeling tired from all the walking. Lakes, waterfalls, water snakes, a natural park very well preserved and protected from man-made pollution or harm. It is not possible to swim in the lakes or rivers, but if it is the price to pay to maintain the place as is, then I am very happy to comply.

Escape to Florence

Why is the weather in London so miserable when it is just glorious in Florence?! Heatwave in Italy? I’m not one to complain when I have been trying to escape pouring rain in the UK.And mamma mia, la pasta and el gelato…delicious! Top it all up with some limoncello, and I’m in heaven. Good food is a must for me when choosing a travel destination, and Italy never ever disappoints. I particularly like Napolitan food. Anything “Caprese” gets a high mark from me.

Amazing beauty in Mexico, specially in Tulum and the nearby playa Paraiso. Gorgeous coastline, simply breathtaking.

Flights of tenths of pelicans were the most beautiful things I had seen in a while.

I was really surprised when some men started climbing up a pole in the middle of a square by the beach to then throw themselves down while turning around in a circle. One of them was making music at the top while the others were just floating in the air and gradually coming down to the ground. What an unexpected show!

Chichen Itza

The day I traveled to Chichen Itza, one of the current seven wonders of the world, temperatures were high. It was boiling! I got a sunburn on that day I believe. I didn’t have a hat and I regretted it. I’ve just bought one now though. I didn’t want to take the risk to damage my skin any further. I used to think I had Superman’s skin: undamageable, unbeatable, thick and solid. I clearly went overboard so I am taking it easy. My next holiday is next month and now I’m ready to face the sun.

I am leaving you with the image of an iguana, an animal that could be seen everywhere in Mexico, and for which I developed some kind of liking as my trip went along.
